How to calculate an equal split

Add up all the group's expenses and divide by the number of participants: that's each person's share. Then compare that share with what each person actually paid. Those who paid more than their share are owed money; the others owe money.

The calculator matches debtors with creditors to suggest a short list of payments, instead of routing money through everyone.

Why the cents matter

A total of 10.01 split between three people doesn't come out evenly. Rounding each share up to 3.34 would create an extra cent; rounding down to 3.33 would lose two. Here the remainder is allocated cent by cent, in entry order, so the shares add up exactly to the total.

When to move to a Pivunio group

This calculator is made for a one-off split: a night out, a shop, a trip. As soon as there are several expenses spread over time, several payers and a changing group, a group is more comfortable: the history is kept and everyone adds their expenses from their own phone.

To go further: splitting expenses with friends or managing holiday expenses.

Frequently asked questions

How is the calculation done?

The total spent is divided equally between the participants. Each person is then compared with their share: those who paid too much are reimbursed by those who paid too little.

What happens with the cents?

When the total doesn't divide evenly, the remainder is allocated cent by cent, in entry order. The shares always add up exactly to the total: nothing is lost or created.

Is my data stored?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, nothing is saved, and reloading the page resets the calculator.

When is a Pivunio group a better fit?

As soon as there are several expenses, several days or several payers. The calculator suits a one-off split; a group keeps the history and updates as you go.
