Buying guide
Best expense splitting apps: how to decide
There is no app that is best for everyone. There is an app that fits your group, your logging habits and your budget. Here are the criteria that actually make the difference, and what nine apps offer according to their own official pages.
Verification date — Information gathered on August 23, 2026 from each app's own official website. Nothing is taken from third-party comparisons: anything not clearly stated there is shown as “Not verified”.
The four criteria that actually decide
- 🧾
Logging volume
A trip easily produces ten expenses a day. A daily cap then becomes the first blocker.
- 📶
Network
Hiking, abroad, festivals: if you log offline, this outranks every other criterion.
- ⚖️
Split precision
Subgroups, half shares, percentages: the more uneven your expenses, the more split modes matter.
- 💳
Budget
Some convenience features are paid elsewhere. Decide whether you will really use them.
Nine apps, app by app
One card per app rather than a nine-column table, so it stays readable on a phone. Every line comes from that app's own official pages; anything they did not state clearly is marked as not verified.

Best for…
Nothing to install for the people you invite: Pivunio, because people join from a link with a first name, with no logging cap.
Travel without coverage: Splid, which advertises online and offline use, or Tricount, whose offline mode syncs later.
Several currencies in one trip: Splid (150+ currencies converted automatically), Settle Up (rates for the transaction date) or Splitser (150+ currencies).
A one-off kitty with no account: Kittysplit, where a secret link is enough, or Sesterce, usable without an email address.
Open source: Spliit, built in the open and funded by donations.
Paying each other inside the app: Splitser for direct payments, or Splitwise and Tricount for their payment integrations and requests.
A PDF or spreadsheet at the end of the trip: Splid for PDF and Excel summaries, or Sesterce for a table export.
What Pivunio does not do
For honesty: Pivunio does not scan receipts, produces no insights, does not work offline, exports no PDF or spreadsheet, converts no currency automatically and imports no existing history. If any of those is decisive for you, several apps above are a better fit today.
Frequently asked questions
Is there one best app overall?
No. The right choice depends on how many expenses you log per day, whether you have a network, whether you need currency conversion or exports, and whether you are willing to pay for a subscription.
Why do some rows say “Not verified”?
Because the app's own official pages did not clearly state it on the day we checked. We would rather show a gap than guess or copy a third-party comparison.
Why are competitor prices missing?
Only the amounts written on an official page are quoted, such as Splitser's €0.35 fee per built-in payment. Subscription prices vary by country, so we do not reproduce them.
Do you have to pay to keep accounts properly?
Not necessarily. Tricount, Splid and Spliit are presented as free, Sesterce has a free offering with some features announced as Premium, Pivunio is free during its beta, and the Splitwise free plan remains usable below 4 expenses added per day.
